Most marketing professionals and business owners roll their eyes at the thought of text message marketing. It just isn’t a hot topic these days.
You don’t see seminars about texting.
You don’t see special white papers about texting.
You don’t see how-to guides about it either.
While text message marketing isn’t hot right now, it is an incredibly cost effective and powerful technology. When used properly, text marketing will often beat out other marketing efforts including PPC, banners and even email!
To put it bluntly, text message marketing gets results.
If you haven’t considered using text marketing, here are five solid reasons to start today.
1. Text Message Marketing Is Easy
When you say text marketing, most people think of typing on their smartphone. Sending hundreds or thousands of messages is just an insurmountable task.
That’s just not true.
Today, there’s software you can buy or online systems that allow you to capture customer phone numbers, send them messages, set up auto responders and even do advanced list segmentation.
Like any marketing system, you can make it as simple or complex as you want.
Some text messaging systems can be set up and used in less than 10 minutes. I think that qualifies as easy!
2. Text Message Marketing is Powerful
If you’re wondering how powerful text message marketing can be, I’ve got one number for you.
Yep, 94 percent is the number of text messages viewed within 10 minutes of being sent.
Compare that with your email marketing campaign, where open rates of 10% or 20% is considered great. Texting beats email marketing hands down!
Why is text messaging so powerful?
Part of the reason is real-time delivery.
When you send a customer or prospect an email you never know when, or if, they’ll read your message.
On the other hand, smartphone users look at their device an average of 150 times a day!
If you sleep for eight hours, that means when you’re awake, you check your phone more than nine times per hour, or about every seven minutes!
When you send a text message, you’re putting your message where your customers spend their time.
3. Test Message Marketing Generates Revenue
Getting your message in front of people isn’t enough. We need to get people to engage. Because of the short message nature of texts, you’re forced to get to the point.
Also, you have the ability to include a phone number in your message — so one click gets you a call.
Or, you can include a short link to your website. Again, one click gets them engaged.
But the proof is in the pudding.
In one case study an herbalist and nutritional counselor generated $1,400 in new phone orders by sending one text message.
There are hundreds of examples, but with the right message, delivered at the right time, text messages are incredibly effective.
4. Text Message Marketing is Cost Effective
Now many of you are asking, “Text messaging is easy and clearly effective, but what does it cost?”
Like ice cream aficionados Baskin-Robbins, this is an answer with 31 flavors.
You can build your own text messaging software, order software with lots of bells and whistles and even find plain vanilla hosted services online.
To give you an idea of cost, high-end texting services often charge upwards of $4,000 a month plus the cost of sending messages.
On the other end of the spectrum, there are online, hosted services available for a small fee of $2.50 a month plus 2 pennies a text.
Obviously, at the high end you get hand holding and lots of features. At the low end, its more of “do-it-yourself” system.
There are offerings available for every budget, so do some Google searching and within a few minutes you’ll have a number of options in several price ranges.
5. Text Message Marketing Isn’t Unique
This reason to send text messages will make some technology geeks cringe.
Text message marketing isn’t unique, new or even fancy!
This isn’t an exciting technology. Heck, I know many retirees who use text messaging to communicate with their kids and friends! Everyone knows about texting.
That’s what makes it so effective.
Everyone sends and receives text messages. As a result, customers are comfortable using text for communication.
There you have it. Those are my five great reasons you should consider adding text marketing to your marketing arsenal.
Keep in mind, I’m not suggesting you throw out all your marketing efforts and focus entirely on texting.
Texting is another arrow in your quiver. It’s another channel of communication. And, when used with social media, physical mail, banner ads, PPC and even email, it helps put your company and your products front and center of your audience.
