Embracing Consistency: My 3 Step Social Media Posting Plan

Embracing Consistency: My 3 Step Social Media Posting Plan

One word keeps coming up in various small business trainings, freelancing webinars and writer chat groups.

Consistency.

We all know we need to be visible to support a growing (or thriving!) online business, but the foundational principle behind that is showing up regularly, with value, so your business stays top-of-mind with your audience.

So, what does that look like?

Today on the Web Writing Advice blog, I’m sharing one of the ways I focus on consistency with social media posting for my small business when writer’s block creeps in or my calendar is overstuffed with tasks. Sometimes it’s hard to think of what to post to keep the marketing momentum going, but I’ve come up with a simple three-step process that always gives me something aligned with my business goals and interests my readers.

My Three Steps for Consistent Social Media Posts

I’m pretty good at creating a variety of content online, but sometimes when my brain is feeling tired, I draw a blank. It happens to most of us occasionally!

So, a few years ago, I had this idea to not only post about a topic once, but instead, three times within a short time period of two to three weeks. To help illustrate this process, I’ll use the example of promoting posts published on the Web Writing Advice blog.

Step 1: Create Anticipation

The first of the three posts is a teaser to get people excited about something coming up.

To align with the example, I might share the upcoming topic of the blog post, or simply that I’m working on a new post. Then, I include a link for folks to subscribe so they can get the post in their email inbox when it’s live.

This approach drums up interest (and gains more readers) before the content is even ready to view. Simple!

Step 2: Share the Piece

Then, I share what I promised in the first post.

For the blog promotion example, I’d share the link to the newly published post. I like to include a little insider backstory about why it was written or the first few paragraphs of the content itself, along with a photo or graphic.

This second social media post delivers on the promise I made a few days earlier of sharing something new with my readers. Consistency!

Step 3: Send a Reminder

Nobody likes to feel like they missed out on something valuable. For the third post in the series, I find it important (and productive) to send out a social message about what has been published recently.

I often get comments thanking me because the reader didn’t see the notice earlier. Yes! The process is working!

Additional Ways to Create Consistency

Of course, this three-step posting process isn’t the only way I show up for my audience online. I’ve written about many other ways to support consistency in small businesses.
